POLYVOLVE SWIVEL DS
Unmatched Superior Swivel For Well Completion

World’s strongest & most durable patented stackable polymer bearing swivel with unlimited load bearing

Challenges

  • Loss hook load due to high drag forces of lower completion in long horizontal section
  • High side loading frictional losses of work string due to extended well path

Solution

  • PolyVolve Swivel DS to re-distribute the friction side load forces, delay the onset sinusoidal, helical buckling.
  • Provided Merlin ERD T&D software for precise simulation prior job – to show whether the application is right and able to execute.
  • No HWDP – no large swab or surge effect.
  • No setting down to re-cock – continuous upward operation.
  • Able to temporarily lock if required – to provide operational assurance in reaching TD.
  • Able to provide high performance swiveling of up to 120rpm operating speed and 250,000lbs compression.

Results

  • Swivel was activated – final stand at 20rpm and 8fpm with low surface and additional weight on hook gain – Successful swiveling
  • No NPT recorded on DDR – Aligned with T&D simulation results.
  • Reached TD for the first time without impairment – after non-successful tries before.
  • Swivel successfully locked with applied pressure – confirmed at surface with both rotationally and axially locked and stroked in the locked spline position.

The Overview

As part of major ERD, client required their slotted liner lower completion with multiple swell packers for zonal isolation to reach TD.

They had to overcome loss of hook load due to high drag forces of lower completion in the long horizontal section and the high side loading frictional losses of the work string due to an extended and torturous well path.

To solve the challenge, a lockable drill pipe swivel was sought for the ability to swivel the work-string independently of the lower completion to re-distribute side loading without distributing harmful torque to the lower completion which could lead to compromising the completion design intent or even parting string.

Lower completions were successfully deployed to TD over 23,000ft with horizontal section of over 12,000ft. PolyVolve Swivel DS was generating additional 45,000lbs of available hook weight for the final 3 stands to reach planned setting depth. Locking of the swivel was successfully completed at the time of setting the liner hanger, allowing for the capability to transfer torque if needed to secondary mechanically release the liner hanger tool.
